Uber launches in Brussels!

$

My favorite private driver app Uber, just announced its launch in Brussels. Due to local regulatory restrictions, Uber was forced to limit its service offerings to uberPOP. At least for now. uberPOP allows private individuals to offer transportation services using the powerful Uber app. My personal favorite is still Uber Black, the luxury car service by Uber which is now available in more than 25 countries. I’ve used Uber Black in Paris, New York and Cape Town and was blown away by their phenomenal service every single time.

A quick visit to Amsterdam loaded with great experiences last weekend. A long overdue stay at Andaz Amsterdam: amazing interior design by Marcel Wanders, attentive staff, great Bluespoon Bar & Restaurant. Rather expensive at €252 for Canal View King room (upgraded from Andaz King as Hyatt Gold Passport Platinum member)

Friend of mine recommended &Samhoud Places for dinner on Saturday night. Booked it after quick look at food pics on Tripadvisor. Turned out to be a rather expensive choice. :)

Enjoyed 2 UberLUX (Mercedes-Benz S-Class & BMW 7 Series) and 4 UberBlack (Mercedes-Benz E-Class) rides in Amsterdam.  As usual, excellent Uber service by friendly drivers. Two cool venues I discovered during my 24 hour trip:
Door 74 (Speakeasy Cocktailbar, reservations required)
EYE Bar-Restaurant (part of EYE Film Institute)

St Patrick’s Day in Dublin, Ireland

Another one to tick off my bucket list: Saint Patrick’s Day in Dublin! Days after I published my book review ‘101 places to get f*cked up before you die‘, I received an invitation from the tourism board of Ireland to attend St. Patrick’s day in Dublin. I generally don’t accept comped trips, as it takes away the fun of scoring those exceptional hotel and airline deals, but I made an exception for this one. Aer Lingus flew me from Brussels to Dublin in 1h40m arriving at the new Terminal 2 (opened in Nov 2010). I was surprised by how modern the Dublin airport was and the high number of international destinations it serves. Did you know Aer Lingus has a direct flight between Dublin and San Francisco? That’s probably linked to the fact many large internet companies have major offices in Dublin: Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, eBay, PayPal, Yahoo!, … which makes it the Silicon Valley of Europe.

Pic: Lord Mayor of Dublin, Oisín Quinn, welcoming us in Ireland (Mar 2014)
St Paddys day is celebrated on March 17, which was a Monday this year. As I arrived on Saturday March 15, I had time for some other activities too. I joined a group of 40 journalist from around the globe for a Welcome Reception hosted by the Lord Mayor or Dublin followed by a guide city tour. Later in the afternoon, we were offered a master class Irish Coffee making at the beautiful rooftop lounge of The Marker hotel.

Pic: Master Class Irish Coffee Making at The Marker Hotel, Dublin (Mar 2014)
On Saturday night, I met up with Belgian friend Bart and his Facebook colleagues Chris and Daniel to watch the Six Nations Championship Rugby Finals in Irish pub The Barge. The Irish won from the French, which resulted in a outburst of joy & emotion. For our ride from the pub to our dinner venue Bear, I ordered an Uber car which turned out to be an awesome 6 door Mercedes-Benz stretch limo!

Pic: Our Uber 6-door Mercedes-Benz stretch limousine ride in Dublin (Mar 2014)
After our dinner at Bear (try the delicious ribs!) it went on to Bar with No Name and 37 Dawson Street where we partied away the night.

Pic: Breakfast at Radisson Blu Royal in Dublin (Mar 2014)
Sunday was more relax with a late breakfast at the Radisson Blu Royal, followed by a visit to Dublin coastal village Howth.

Pic: St Patricks Day crowds in the streets of Dublin, Ireland (Mar 2014)
And then it was finally the big day, the St Patrick’s Day parade in the streets of Dublin! Everyone wearing green, fun hats, shamrock and a great atmosphere. As international journalists we had the privilege to ride a double deck bus in the parade to enjoy everything with a birds eye view!

Double Room at Town Hall Hotel in East London
Pic: Double Room at Town Hall Hotel in East London (Mar 2014)
For my Friday night stay in London, I used last-minute booking app HotelTonight which had Town Hall Hotel in hip East London on offer for €156. Thanks to the promo codes I published in February (+ referral credits), my stay was free. Unfortunately, most promo codes are no longer valid, but you can still get €20 or $25 discount on your first booking using my referral code BLAPERS. I expect more HotelTonight promo codes to surface in the next months, so make sure to follow my blog, twitter account and TravelMagic Facebook page for instant updates.Swimming Pool Town Hall Hotel in East London

As points & miles addicts, we tend to stay at chain hotels most of the time. The beauty of alternative booking apps like HotelTonight and Airbnb is the fact you often end-up with independent hotels and B&Bs what can result in surprising experiences… Town Hall Hotel was one of them. What an amazing Art Deco property!

Did you know only 64 out of 1069 hotels in London have a pool? Well, Town Hall Hotel is one of them and gosh is it beautiful!

Another exceptional venue at the Town Hall Hotel is their restaurant ‘Corner Room‘ where I had an excellent breakfast served (menu) in a great atmosphere on Saturday morning.

Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard in London
Pic: Shangri-La Hotel at The Shard in London (Mar 2014)
A visit to The Shard was on my todo list for a while now, as it will be hosting the much hyped Shangri-La The Shard hotel on floors 34 to 52 offering beautiful views of The City. The hotel will officially open on May 6, but don’t get too excited as rooms start at £450 (€540) per night! Lets hope HotelTonight adds it to its portfolio. ;-)  Anyway, you don’t need to stay at the Shangri-La to enjoy The View from The Shard. You can access viewing platforms on the 69th and 72nd floor (244m) for £29 (bloody expensive!). Make sure to make advance reservations (e.g. early morning on the day of your visit) as sunset hours tend to sell out fast.

More nice venues I discovered during my weekend trip:
Bistrotheque (Dinner, walking distance from Town Hall Hotel)
Elliot’s Cafe (Borough Market, walking distance from The Shard)
I had dinner at both venues seated at the bar (I was by myself) and really loved the suggestions made the bartender at Elliot’s Cafe (menu). Make sure to try the Pig Head Kromeski with tartare sauce and the Sweetbreads, Black Pudding & Caramelized Apple!

My booking was an Executive City View Suite at €855, but thanks to IHG’s Best Price Guarantee, my stay was free! I had jokingly tweeted InterContinental Amstel requesting an upgrade to their exclusive Dom Perignon Suite. To my surprise, the hotel answered “Let us see what we can do ;) #youneverknow”. And yes, after some confusion at check-in, I was assigned the Dom Perignon Junior Suite room number 122. As IHG Rewards Club Platinum member, I was entitled for a one level upgrade to an Executive River View Suite. I assume the hotel appreciated my photography and provided me this exceptional upgrade. Note: I didn’t have access to the full Dom Perignon Executive Luxury Suite which is even larger and has a separate dining area and can be combined with the Junior Suite via connecting doors. Emirates A380 First Class: Amsterdam to Dubai

Emirates Logo
End of April, I flew Emirates First Class from Amsterdam to Los Angeles via Dubai on the A380. The revenue price of my ticket would have been €14988 ($20432), but thanks to Alaska Mileage Plan, I was able to book it for €1644 ($2241) using 100,000 miles. It was Ben Schlappig (OneMileataTime) who taught us at TravelMagic 2013 how to buy Alaska Miles on the cheap and use them to book Emirates First Class.
Emirates First Class Chauffeur Drive Service Mercedes-Benz S-Class Schiphol
Pic: Emirates First Class Chauffeur Drive Service
Emirates Business and First Class bookings include complimentary Chauffeur Drive service. I had the pleasure to enjoy a ride in a brand new Mercedes-Benz S-Class from my hotel in downtown Amsterdam to Schiphol airport. A great start of my Emirates First Class journey! At check-in, I was offered the choice between lounge access or a €45 Food & Beverage voucher which could be used at any restaurant at the airport. I chose the latter, as Emirates doesn’t have a dedicated lounge at AMS and their partner lounge at Schiphol is known for its poor quality. As I wasn’t hungry, I used the voucher to pay the meals of a random family at a pizza place. You should have seen the looks on their faces, they were convinced it was a scam. :-) Instead of having a meal, I relaxed with a nice Spa treatment at XpresSpa.
Emirates A380 First Class Cabin
Pic: Emirates Airbus A380 First Class Cabin
Upon boarding, I was welcomed by one of the First Class flight attendants who escorted me to suite 3A. The Emirates First Class cabin is at the front of the A380 upper deck with 14 suites in a 1x2x1 configuration (seat map). The suites are slightly staggered to avoid looking directly into somebody’s else’s suite. Suites 1A and 1K have less space around them due to the proximity of the First Class bar and Shower Spas. Similar case for suites 4A and 4K due to the proximity of the lavatory and galley.
Emirates 1st edition First Class A380 Suite 2A
Pic: Emirates First Class Suite 2A (2008 edition) on A380
Emirates has two First Class suite versions on the A380, the original 2008 suite with 23-inch IFE screen and the in 2012 introduced version with 27-inch Panasonic HD Screen. Other minor differences between the two First Class suites versions are:
1) wireless IFE and seat control unit (looks similar to iPad in the 2012 version)
2) position of the lamp located next to the IFE screen
My EK148 flight from Amsterdam to Dubai featured the ‘old’ First Class suite, whereas my EK215 flight from Dubai to Los Angeles had the newest First Class suite.

Before take-off, a flight attendant distributed the Emirates A380 Shower Spa menus (page 1,2,3,4,5,6) and made a round through the cabin to take reservations. I had my shower session scheduled two hours before arrival in Dubai. The Emirates A380 has two Shower Spas located at the front of the First Class cabin which are serviced by two dedicated Cabin Services Assistants. Yes, you read that correctly, two crew members whose sole job is to make sure the Shower Spas are in top notch condition at all times during the flight!

After take-off, it was time for the more expensive champagne, Dom Perignon Vintage 2004. Following the caviar service, I had the renowned Emirates Traditional local Arabic mezze: The Flavours of our home, presented as a generous spread of traditional Arabic savoury dishes, including hommous, moutabal, tabouleh, muhammara, labneh with herbs, makdous, marinated pickles, vine leaves, lamb bil ajeen, and falafel, complemented by local garnishes and breads.

Emirates A380 Business Class Bar and Lounge
Pic: Emirates A380 Onboard Business Class Lounge
After lunch, I visited the Business Class bar located at the back of the A380 upper deck. Unfortunately, I didn’t meet Cristiano Ronaldo nor Pelé! ;-) I did have an interesting conversation with a Dutch business man traveling on Emirates on monthly bases. He confirmed the superiority of the middle eastern airlines (Emirates, Etihad, Qatar Airways, …) versus the ‘traditional’ European and American airlines.
Emirates A380 First Class Bar
Pic: Emirates A380 Onboard First Class Bar
The First Class cabin has its own bar at the front of the A380 upper deck. It isn’t as spectacular at the Business Class lounge, but features a number of premium brandies (e.g. Hennessy Paradis) which not available at the Business Class bar.Emirates A380 First Class Suite - Fully flat Bed
Pic: Emirates First Class – Suite 3E with seat in flatbed mode
After all the eating and drinking, it was time for some rest. I requested the flight attendant to prepare the bed in the Suite next to mine, as the flight had such light First Class load. The bed was really comfortable with an additional mattress put on top of the seat in combination with a duvet.Emirates First Class A380 Shower Spa Restroom

The absolute highlight of my Emirates A380 First Class flight was scheduled at the end: showering at 40,000 feet, what an exhilarating experience!

The Shower Spa had heated flooring creating a warm atmosphere. Aside from complimentary Timeless Spa products, I found fluffy towels, toothbrushes, shaving kits, cotton buds, combs and shower caps. There was even a hair dryer!
Emirates A380 First Class Shower
The Emirates First Class Shower Spa Experience lasts for approximately 20-30 minutes. The system is designed to give you a set shower time (5 minutes) which starts when you turn on the shower. You can maintain and control the water usage at your leisure. There is a time indicator located inside the shower cubicle so that you can check how much time is available. To let you know that the end of your shower time is approaching, the system will automatically pause the water flow with one minute remaining.

Conclusion: My first Emirates First Class flight was a truly sensational experience. An amazing hard product combined with an excellent & attentive cabin crew makes Emirates First Class one of the best airline products I have ever flown! Next time I fly a competitor’s First Class cabin, my first question will be “Where are the showers?” ;-)
PS: A special thank you goes out to the First Class crew of flight EK148 (Apr 27, 2014) for their excellent service.

Emirates EK215
Dubai (DXB) – Los Angeles (LAX)
Tuesday April 29, 2014
Departure: 8:55AM

I had my hotel pick-up (Emirates Chauffeur-Drive service) scheduled early in the morning to make sure I had enough time to discover the massive Emirates A380 Hub. Concourse A is 645m long, has twenty (20!!) A380 gates and a dedicated First Class floor with seating for 1491 First Class passengers. Note that an Emirates A380 has only 14 First Class Suites, multiply that by 20 and you realize there can only be a maximum of 280 First Class passengers present at any given time. They like to think big in Dubai! :)

Before my arrival in LAX, I refreshed with a fantastic inflight shower Spa session (check my previous Emirates First Class trip report for pictures). Traveling for 16 hours in economy class must be quite a challenge, but when in Emirates First, you wish the flight would be even longer! I hope to have the opportunity to fly more with Emirates in the near future, preferably in First. ;-)
PS: A special thank you goes out to purser Ben, flights attendants Kinga & Joon and their colleagues for the excellent service & hospitality.

  • Brussels Airlines Preferred American Express (€120 annual fee)
Sign-up bonus: 6000 miles (instead of 3000 miles)

Brussels Airlines Premium American Express Credit Card

  • Brussels Airlines Premium American Express (€150 annual fee)
Sign-up bonus: 12000 miles (instead of 6000 miles)

Pay your cellphone bill with Brussels Airlines American Express Extra Bonus 2000 miles

  • Pay your cellphone bills with Brussels Airlines American Express
Extra bonus: 2000 miles (one time)

Earning airline miles is not limited to flying, you can earn miles with almost anything these days. One of the easiest ways to earn extra miles is signing up for a credit card. You will receive a number of miles just for signing up for the card and you will get 1,25 or 1,5 miles per euro spent. American Express also provides a bonus when you spend a certain amount in one year. Unfortunately, the number of credit cards earning airline miles is very limited in Belgium. Still, they can offer you a great opportunity to travel the world in luxury on a budget. For Belgian residents, the credit card offers are limited to one program, Miles and More of the Lufthansa group. Miles of this program can be used to book (and upgrade) flights of any Star Alliance carrier.
Brussels Airlines Preferred American Express Credit Card details
Brussels Airlines Premium American Express Credit Card details
Brussels Airlines American Express conditions
Brussels Airlines offers three Miles and More credit cards: the Preferred MasterCard, the Preferred American Express and the Premium American Express. I don’t detail the MasterCard in this posts as it comes with only 2000 welcome miles. I signed-up for the Brussels Airlines Preferred American Express Card back in 2008 and switched to the Premium American Express card in 2011 earning me a total of more than 400,000 miles! The key to earning the maximum amount of miles is to pay as much as possible with your credit card. Pay all your bills and purchases (both online and offline) with your credit card, every euro counts! Shopping (including groceries), dining, gas, electronics, hotels, airline tickets, … almost everything! Some payments might even result in an extra bonus. Example: Paying your cellphone bills with your Brussels Airlines American Express card gets you 2000 bonus miles!
The yearly fee also includes a number of insurances:

Full details of the Brussels Airlines Preferred and Premium American Express insurances.
How much are those miles worth?
It all depends on what you spend them. In my opinion, only long-haul Business Class and First Class flights are worth spending miles on. These allow you to maximize the value of your miles as Business Class flights easily cost >€2000 and First Class flights >€8000. Airline loyalty programs will do everything to make you spend your miles on less valuable options e.g. use miles to buy goodies in their online shop, book hotel nights or rent a car. You really don’t want to do that! Miles and More is currently selling miles with a 20% bonus, which is still way too expensive, but it gives you an idea how they value the miles.
Miles and More Buy Miles
Signing up for the Brussels Airlines Premium American Express earns you 12,000 miles which are being sold for €245 by Lufthansa.
Miles and More Buy Miles with bonus
Include the 2000 extra miles you get for paying your cellphone bill with American Express, and you have 14,000 miles which are being sold for ~€290!
How do I maximize the number of miles earned?
I would recommend to sign-up for the Brussels Airlines Premium American Express card now to get the 12000 miles. Complete the form to pay your cellphone bill with the card and earn an additional 2000 miles. Next year, you could cancel the Premium card and switch to the Preferred card. You would earn the sign-up bonus again (this time for the Preferred card, which is 6000 miles via the friend referral) and you would earn another 2000 miles when you register to have your cellphone bills paid with the Preferred card. That’s 22,000 miles in one year, just by signing up for these cards!

What are the pitfalls?

  • The annual fees of the Brussels Airlines American Express cards are high (€120/€150). You might want to consider canceling your card after you collected all the sign-up bonuses.
  • American Express cards have a high conversion fee (2,5%) for non-euro payments. Use your Brussels Airlines American Express cards for euro payments only. For non-euro payments, I recommend the BKCP Visa card. See all details in our Credit Cards for Belgian Travellers post.

I’m not yet a Miles and More member, where do I sign-up?
You can enroll at the Miles and More website.

Full disclosure: By signing up for the Brussels Airlines American Express card using my personalized link, I will receive bonus miles (friend referral program).  Thank you for supporting my travel blog and enjoy your double sign-up bonus!

The Siq leading to the Treasury at Petra in Jordan
Early August, the Jordan Tourism Board invited me to discover their country. Despite being bordered by Iraq, Syria and Israel, Jordan has proven to be an island of security in the Middle East turmoil. At no point during my trip I felt unsafe. Together with 2 Belgian and 4 Dutch bloggers, I flew Royal Jordanian direct from Amsterdam to the Jordan capital Amman. After a night at Le Meridien Amman, we drove to Petra where we had the pleasure to stay at the Mövenpick Resort located at the entrance of the Petra Visitor Center.

Petra, a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1985 and one of the New 7 Wonders of the World, is Jordan’s most-visited tourist attraction. The highlight of this hidden city is Al Khazneh (“The Treasury”) which was carved out of a sandstone rock face at the beginning of the 1st Century AD. I was initially disappointing by the colors of the sandstone, as the sunlight was too harsh during the early afternoon. I managed to make better pictures with almost no other visitors around in the late afternoon (5pm).

After our Petra guided tour had ended with a lunch near Colonnaded Street, I started hiking a nearby trail not knowing where it would lead me. To my surprise, a similar building to the Treasury called Ad Deir (“The Monastery”) was located at the top of the mountain. The views from the nearby peaks were just amazing!

Petra by Night in Jordan

After dinner, we returned to Petra for a spectacle which takes place 3 times a week: Petra by Night. The Treasury as well as the Siq leading to Al Khazneh were lit by hundreds of candles creating a unique atmosphere.

After a full day at Petra and a night of sleep at the Mövenpick, we headed south for the Wadi Rum desert. Jordan, being a relatively small country, allowed us to travel from one highlight to the next in just a few hours. At the Wadi Rum desert we stayed at a Bedouin camp (no luxury here!) and discovered the desert by 4×4 and camel ride.

Kempinski Hotel Ishtar Dead Sea Jordan Swimming Pool

Fortunately, we were booked at the Kempinski Ishtar Dead Sea after our dusty night in the desert. This 5 star luxury hotel situated on the edge of the famous salt lake (which is the lowest point on earth – 427m below sea level!) provides uninterrupted views across the vast Dead Sea towards the West Bank.

With 34.2% salinity, the Dead Sea is one of the world’s saltiest bodies of water. The unusually high salt concentration means you can easily float in the Dead Sea due to natural buoyancy, something I had to try! :)

Conclusion: Looking for a sanctuary in the Middle East? Visit Jordan. A safe, liberal and friendly country with several amazing highlights located close to each other. Perfect for a one-week vacation!

IHG Rewards Club: Earn 2 free nights or more!

IHG Rewards Club has just announced its Fall 2014 promotion called Into the Nights. Similar to previous ‘The Big Win‘ promos, you need to complete a number of ‘Offers’ before the end of 2014 to earn extra IHG Rewards Club points. When you logon to https://intothenights.ihg.com/ you’ll see your personalized offers. Here are mine:

IHG Rewards Club Into the Nights personalized offer
Each individual offer comes with a number of points. In my case, I can earn a total of 30,900 offer points. Completing all offers results in an additional bonus: the choice between a Bonus points package OR a number of Free Nights. Note that my personalized offer page states “Complete 7 of 7 offers and earn 31,000 Bonus points or 2 free nights”, your offer might state e.g. “Complete 3 of 4 offers and earn XX bonus points and X free nights”.
Bonus Points or Free Nights IHG Rewards Club Into the Nights Promo
I’ll be able to choose between 31,000 extra bonus points or two Free Nights. The Free Nights come as digital vouchers which can be used at any ‘participating’ IHG property as long as they have award availability for your preferred date(s). The Free Night vouchers will be valid for one year. This makes the ‘Into the Nights’ promo extremely valuable if you received a decent personalized offer. Back in 2010, IHG had a similar offer which earned me free night vouchers I used at the Crowne Plaza Times Square on New Year’s Eve, the InterContinental Paris Le Grand and InterContinental London Park Lane. What offer did you get and how do you plan to spend the Free Nights?

Lufthansa Business Class Breakfast
Pic: Lufthansa Business Class Breakfast on BRU to FRA flight (Jul 2014)
End of July, I booked a last-minute trip to Bangkok using 135,000 Lufthansa Miles & More miles + €544,41 in taxes and fees. Not my best redemption to date, but due the last-minute nature of my trip, a better option than paying >€2000 for a revenue ticket. My trip started with a Lufthansa Business Class flight from Brussels to Frankfurt on which a delicious muesli breakfast was served.

In Frankfurt, I visited Lufthansa’s flagship Senator lounge with features the ‘City Lights’ bar and a modern wellness area with luxury facilities that include ten showers and two spa rooms.

As I had already flown Thai Airways A380 First Class twice (TG920 BKK-FRA and TG676 BKK-NRT) and as there was no award availability for Royal First this time, I used the opportunity to try the Thai Airways A380 Business Class cabin. At the time of booking, only middle aisle ‘honeymoon’ seats were still available. (see Upper Deck, Thai Airways A380 seatmap) Middle aisle seats form alternating pairs which are directed inwards or outwards. The inwards directed seats are so called ‘honeymoon’ seats which are great for couples, but not if you’re traveling solo. The outward directed seats are known as ‘divorce seats’. Fortunately, I had honeymoon seats 19E and 19F for myself.

Once settled in my seat, I was provided with a Borghese amenity kit and had a glass of Piper Heidsieck Brut Champagne as pre-departure drink. Flight TG921 left Frankfurt at 2:45pm with foreseen arrival at 6:25am in Bangkok.Full Flat Seat Thai Airways A380 Royal Silk Business Class

Overall, the food experience was underwhelming. After flying Turkish Airlines Business Class several times and enjoying its delicious DO&CO catering, one’s expectations of inflight meal get much higher!

After dinner, it was time to enjoy my fully lie-flat seats. Unfortunately, I didn’t catch much sleep as my biological clock was still convinced it was only early evening time. I noticed how a passenger was anxiously watching his inflight entertainment screen in flightpath mode all night. At departure, he had demanded a statement from the Captain ensuring we would not enter Eastern Ukraine airspace or other war zones. Just 48 hours prior to my flight to Bangkok, MH17 was shot from the skies above Ukraine.

Passengers flying Thai Airways Royal First or Royal Silk class can enjoy a complimentary Spa treatment at the Thai Royal Orchid Spa at Bangkok Suvarnabhumi airport. As Royal Silk Business Class passengers are only entitled to a 30 minutes Neck & Shoulder or Foot Massage, I skipped the treatment. Here’s a map of the locations of the different Thai Airways lounges and Spa.

For my return flight TG920, I was able to secure a window seat with the shelf at the aisle side. Similar to the middle aisle seats, the Thai Airways A380 staggered cabin layout results in alternating seats with the shelf at the aisle or window side. I liked my seat a lot, as it formed a ‘cocoon’ where I was not disturbed by the foot traffic in the aisle. As TG920 departed Bangkok at 11pm, I had a great night of sleep. I even skipped breakfast to allow me to sleep until right before landing. :-)

However, I did have a late night dinner on the Thai A380. Here’s the taste menu of my Bangkok-Frankfurt flight.

King Deluxe room at Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok

End of July, I spent a week in Bangkok, a city which I tend to visit at least once a year. For my first 5 nights, I booked the new Hilton Sukhumvit Bangkok using 120K Hilton HHonors points. The hotel was 30K points per night, but as HHonors Gold member, I got my fifth night for free. Additional benefits were Executive Lounge access, complimentary breakfast and WiFi. A very nice hotel with attentive staff which shows in their excellent tripadvisor reviews.

My trip to Guam and Palau in the Pacific Ocean
Pic: My trip to Guam and Palau in the Pacific Ocean
Earlier this year in April and May, I made a trip around the World which included stopovers in Dubai, Los Angeles, Guam and Palau. I published two extensive trip reports about my Emirates A380 First Class experiences (Amsterdam to Dubai and Dubai to Los Angeles) but didn’t write yet about the rest of my the trip, so here we go…
Rooftop Pool at SIXTY hotel in Beverly Hills
Pic: Rooftop pool at SIXTY Beverly Hills (Apr 2014)
After my arrival at Los Angeles Airport (LAX), an Emirates First Class chauffeur drove me to SIXTY Beverly Hills which I had booked using the HotelTonight app. There wasn’t much time to rest, as I soon got a message from my fellow American travel bloggers who were ready to meet-up.
Travel bloggers meet-up at Santa Monica Pier
Pic: Meeting American travel bloggers at Santa Monica Pier
OmarTahsir and Amol shared some of their newest tricks and latest adventures while we were strolling along Santa Monica Beach. The highlight of the evening was burgers at the world famous In-N-Out near the LAX runway, a plane spotter’s heaven! For my flights from Los Angeles to Guam, I used a trick of the LifeMiles frequent flyer program. For just 25K miles, it was possible to fly United Business Class from Los Angels (LAX) to Guam (GUM) via Tokyo (NRT). The reason behind this was GUM being an American airport triggering LifeMiles only to charge the required miles for a US ‘domestic’ flight. With 18K LifeMiles in my account, which I had bought for $270, I paid $128,37 extra for the remaining 7K miles + a $25 booking fee and $24,93 in taxes & fees making a total of $448,30 (€332,37) for my business class flights from LAX to GUM via NRT. The revenue fare for this trip was €2285!
Guam Tumon Bay Beach
Pic: The beach at Tumon Bay in Guam (click for full size)
For the first weekend of May, hotel rates were extremely high at Tumon Bay as Koreans and Japanese, Guam’s main visitors, had a long weekend. For my first night, I booked a Premier Garden King room at Hilton Guam Resort at $177. Thanks to my Hilton HHonors Gold status, I could enjoy complimentary breakfast and internet access. For my second night, I used 15K Hyatt Gold Passport points to book a Twin Room at Hyatt Regency Guam as the revenue rate was $430 (excl. taxes!) And for my third night, I bought 10K SPG points at $297 (15% off promo) to book The Westin Resort Guam instead of paying $395 revenue rate. Yup, that was a really expensive weekend in Guam!

At Hyatt Regency Guam, my room was upgraded to a Regency Club room, which meant I could enjoy complimentary breakfast with a view.

To be honest, there wasn’t that much to do at Guam apart from enjoying the beach, so it was just a relaxing weekend before heading to Palau.

For my flight from Guam to Palau, I redeemed 12500 United MileagePlus miles +$2.5 instead of paying $461 for a revenue ticket.
70 Islands in Palau

The Republic of Palau must be one of the most unique island countries I’ve ever visited. Part of Micronesia, it offers incredible diving sites and mind boggling views from the air. The scenic flight with a Cessna from Smile Air Inc. ($180 / 30 min.) was one of the highlights of my trip! The Palau reefs are one of the Seven Underwater Wonders of the World.

For my return trip from Koror to Brussels, I used 65K LifeMiles to book Business Class with Asiana Airlines and Lufthansa. With 30K LifeMiles in my account which I had bought for €330, $550.54 (€446,83) for the remaining 35K miles at the time of booking and $46.87 in tax, I paid a total of €776,83 for my comfortable return home.

Air Berlin A330 new Business Class IFE Screen
Pic: Air Berlin A330 new Business Class IFE Screen (Nov 2014)
Mid October, Air Berlin published a really cheap Business Class fare from Oslo, Norway to Jakarta, Indonesia. An opportunity I used to try their new Business Class and to visit Bali. The fare from OSL to CGK via TXL (Berlin) and AUH (Abu Dhabi) was $1018 (€818). For the positioning flight, I booked Lufthansa via Munich at €170. The first leg of the Air Berlin ticket wasn’t really exciting, as it was just a short-haul ‘all economy class’ flight from Oslo to Berlin. The layover at TXL airport was only 1 hour, so I didn’t visit the lounge. In fact, there wasn’t much time to do so, as I had to change terminals at TXL. An annoying experience as you arrive at the ‘temporary’ low-cost terminal C and need to walk outside to terminal A. Unfortunately, it might take another 5 years before the new Berlin Brandenburg Airport opens. Anyway, I was glad to board the Air Berlin A330!
Air Berlin A330 new Business Class Seat 2K
Pic: Air Berlin A330 new Business Class Seat 2K (Nov 2014)
The Air Berlin Business Class seat is very similar to Etihad’s Business Class product. The main differences are the color scheme (obvious), seat pitch and bed length. With 59 inch (150cm) seat pitch at Air Berlin versus 73 inch (185cm) at Etihad and 71.3 inch (181 cm) bed length at Air Berlin versus 73 inch (185cm) at Etihad, taller travelers might prefer the Etihad seat. My Air Berlin A330 flight had a different Business Class configuration compared to the one seat map you find online. I was in seat 2K which doesn’t exist on the SeatGuru map, but in fact was the right front row seat with a lot of extra space in front of it. Not sure what triggers this different Business Class cabin layout.

The crew on the outbound flight AB7494 from Berlin to Abu Dhabi on Nov 7 was outstanding. However, I had the opposite experience on the inbound flight AB7495 from AUH to TXL on Nov 14. I’m used to this on Turkish Airlines flight, were crews are a hit or miss. Future Air Berlin flights will tell me if they have a similar thing going on.

As I hadn’t visited Abu Dhabi before, I opted for a long layover with 6:50am arrival on Saturday morning and 2:40am departure on Sunday morning. My rate at InterContinental Abu Dhabi was €116 which included 5000 bonus points and breakfast, a stay I needed for my Into the Nights challenge. I lucked out with the ‘family room’ rate, as it was much cheaper than regular rooms. Check-in at 8am was no issue, the front desk lady even apologized for not having a Deluxe Sea View room ready yet. Instead I was assigned a Deluxe City View room and granted access to the Club Lounge where I could enjoy drinks & food all day long!

After a long but rewarding day in Abu Dhabi, it was time to continue my journey to Indonesia. The final outbound leg, Abu Dhabi to Jakarta, was operated by Air Berlin’s partner Etihad. I had flown Etihad Business Class back in 2012, so I knew I could expect great service. The Etihad Business Class check-in counters were quite busy at Abu Dhabi airport, but before I had a chance to queue, I was ushered to First Class where I could complete my check-in… seated!
Six Senses Spa Etihad Premium Lounge Abu Dhabi Airport

First thing I did at the Etihad Business and First Class lounge was heading to the Six Senses Spa to make an appointment. Business (menu) and First Class (menu) passengers can choose from a selection of 15 minute treatments, I went for the ‘Back Support’ massage. Surprisingly First Class passengers don’t get longer treatments like the ones I experienced at Thai Airways First Class. Maybe this will change when their new First Class lounge opens in April 2015 at Terminal 3.

With take-off in the middle of the night (2.40am), I fell asleep as soon we reached cruising altitude. I did wake-up along the way to have a steak sandwich, but it wasn’t as tasty as on my first Etihad Business Class flight back in 2012. :)

After some muesli and fresh fruits, I had the Arabic Style Egg White and Tomato Frittata with Halloumi Labneh and Olives for breakfast. Delicious! Overall a great flight with excellent Etihad service as we are used to from Middle Eastern airlines.
AirAsia Red Carpet Service
At Jakarta airport (CGK), I continued my trip on a separate AirAsia ticket to Denpasar, Bali which included Air Asia’s highly recommended Red Carpet service. I used it twice now, once at Kuala Lumpur airport and this time in Jakarta. Actually, it resembles Lufthansa’s First Class ground services… but obviously a less fancy version of it! Red Carpet comes with dedicated check-in counter, personal assistant guiding you through immigration and security, lounge access and….they actually drive you over the tarmac to the plane in a separate AirAsia Red Carpet shuttle! In fact, they had a full busload of passengers waiting for minutes next to the plane, just to make sure I could board the plane first! All this for less than €12 ($15)!!! I really hope AirAsia will keep offering this service as it doesn’t seem to be too popular. It rocks!

And of course, there was more of the same great flying on the way back from Indonesia to Norway. With a long layover between my AirAsia flight from Denpasar and the connection to Abu Dhabi, I had to figure out a way to bridge the time gap between my arrival at CGK and check-in opening for AUH at Jakarta Soekarno–Hatta International Airport. Fortunately, I spotted the Taman Sari Royal Heritage Spa at the end of Terminal 2F. The interior was tired and dated, treatments were really expensive, but at least the massage was good and I had the opportunity to take a shower afterwards.Garuda Indonesia Executive Lounge Jakarta CGK Soekarno Hatta Airport

Contrary to the outdate Spa before check-in, I found a refreshing Garuda Executive Lounge airside. As Etihad Airways Business Class passenger, you got a voucher at check-in which is valid for a number of lounges at CGK. The Garuda lounge looked the best pick.

Got to spend a nice, but cold, Saturday in Oslo before returning home with Lufthansa via Munich. Conclusion: I was lucky to get alerted about this great Air Berlin / Etihad Business Class fare via my TravelMagic team and Drew & Carrie at TravelisFree. It was a nice opportunity to experience both Air Berlin’s and Etihad’s Business Class product and got a great stay in Indonesia on top. More about my Bali trip soon!

Etihad A380: First Class Apartment for €17 ($21)

Etihad Airways new logo
Thanks to my Etihad Guest Gold status and a Double Miles offer, my Air Berlin & Etihad Business Class trip to Jakarta earned me an amazing 46,050 Etihad Guest miles! This included 34.402 Guest Tier Miles which is only 5598 miles short of requalification for the Eithad Guest Gold tier!
Etihad Airways A380 First Class Apartment Seat
Excited by the high number of miles earned, I started browsing Etihad’s award availability for their newest product, the A380, which will start serving the Abu Dhabi – London route as of December 27, 2014. As expected, astronomical amounts of miles were required to book The Residence. For the first half of 2015, First Class Apartments were only available at First Suite Saver level requiring more than four hundred thousand miles. Yes, 400000! And then this happened…
Etihad A380 First Class Apartment Award Availability Abu Dhabi - London
For whatever reason, it was possible to book the new Etihad A380 First Class Apartments at Guest First award level for flights on Saturday October 10, 2015. Other days in 2015 required more than 400,000 miles to book the same seat! With 13,453 miles from my Etihad Business Class flight back in 2012, my total Etihad Guest balance was 59,503 miles. Enough for this amazing award redemption. I didn’t hesitate and booked immediately. There was Guest First availability in both directions, but I selected the AUH-LHR flight as its air time is 50 minutes longer. Taxes were also lower for departures from Abu Dhabi, 80 AED (€17) compared to 190 GBP (€240) from London. The revenue fare for my flight was €4813 ($5955).
Etihad Airways A380 First Class Apartment Aisle
As Etihad Guest miles seemed to be quite valuable, I opted for the Miles + Cash option which allowed me to buy an extra 13,935 miles for 460,69 AED (€102) during the booking process. Afterwards, I also noticed there was a promotion for Etihad Guest redemptions until Dec 10, 2014 which would refund 25% of the redeemed miles after the actual flight! What a deal! Let’s hope Etihad doesn’t delay its A380 services any longer, fingers crossed!

Key success factors for amazing redemptions:

  • If you have an opportunity to status match, do so. This is how I got Etihad Guest Gold
  • Make sure to check loyalty program promotions before you travel
  • Keep your miles for valuable redemptions, don’t waste them on this!

New Year’s Eve in Sydney

Qantas New Year's Eve Sydney
Pic: Sydney New Year’s Eve = seven tonnes of Fireworks! (Dec 2014)
After celebrating New Year’s Eve on Times Square in New York and at the Big Ben in London, Sydney was next. I flew Qantas First Class from London to Melbourne via Dubai and connected to Sydney in Qantas Business Class. (more on that later) As you might imagine, hotels were really expensive for NYE. Instead of paying 2813AUD (~€1986), I used 150K IHG Rewards Club points to book a Superior Cityside room for 3 nights at InterContinental Sydney. Another great points redemption! ;-)

Nope, that wasn’t the view from my room. I took this picture from the swimming pool at InterContinental Sydney. My room was facing city side and an upgrade to harbour view would have been 500AUD per night extra! Add another 1000AUD per night if you wanted Club Lounge access. Yup, New Year’s Eve prices are insane.

The Royal Botanic Garden Sydney

I started the last day of 2014 with a morning run at the fantastic Royal Botanic Gardens. The complete park was fenced off to ensure a safe New Year’s Eve celebration, but to my surprise, a security guard invited me in to enjoy my run in the park. Only a few other joggers were present in the park, which made enjoying its beauty a unique experience!

When celebrating New Year’s Eve in Sydney, you want to watch the fireworks up-close. But you’re not alone, hundreds of thousands of spectators gather around the harbour with the same purpose. So what would be the best strategy to secure a good spot? After some research, I learned people started lining-up at the public viewing spots as early as 7am! After my 9 hour wait in the blistering cold on Times Square in 2010, I didn’t feel like a 16 hour tanning session at Sydney harbour. With a group of friends, it could be fun, but as I was traveling solo, I wanted a different solution. First alternative, buy a ticket for one of the vantage point parties. NYE Under the Stars was selling tickets at 395AUD (€277) to sit on the lawn. Park Hyatt Sydney charged 595AUD (€418) for their Rooftop Cocktail Party with limited Sydney Harbour Bridge views. After a few hours of reading blogs and forums, I learned the best opportunity was hiding in plain sight: Sydney Opera House! Turned out they were still selling tickets for their New Year’s Opera Gala Concert mid December. I ordered the cheapest ticket in the house (Choir row 2!) at 264AUD (€181). The ticket would give me access to the Opera Gala performance with a 9pm break to see the “family fireworks” and allow me to see the midnight fireworks from the Southern Foyers. The Opera’s Midnight Party, which required an additional ticket, was already sold out when I checked mid December. The extra benefit of the party was access to the Opera House Northern Foyers which have terraces providing 180 degree uninterrupted views of the Harbour Bridge and surroundings, free flow of drinks….and birds eye view on the Lord Mayor’s New Year’s Eve party!
Spectators at Sydney Harbour Bridge

I called the Sydney Opera House ticket desk on the morning of December 30th and boy was I excited to learn they had exactly 1 ticket left for the Midnight Party! Apparently a number of tickets get booked but not collected in due time and are released again. Add an additional 279AUD (€192) for the Midnight Party and my total for the night was 543AUD (€373)… an expensive night out in Sydney!

The Sydney Opera House Northern Foyers vantage point offered amazing views, but to be honest, my experience of the New Year’s Eve fireworks in London in 2012 was more intense. In fact, those were the most spectacular fireworks I ever witnessed.

British Airways Galleries First Class Lounge Terminal 3 London Heathrow

For my year end trip to Australia, I used 150K US Airways Dividend Miles which I bought for $1702 (€1288). I managed to buy these miles at 1.1 dollar cents during their fabulous 100% bonus on shared miles promos back in Oct 2013, Dec 2013 and Apr 2014. I paid an additional $370 (€285) in taxes and fees to book Amsterdam (AMS) – London Heathrow (LHR) – Dubai (DXB) – Melbourne (MEL) – Sydney (SYD) roundtrip with the long haul flights in First Class and short haul segments in Business Class. My total airfare was €1573 for a trip which could have been easily €8280 booked as revenue ticket!Taittinger Prelude Champagne British Airways Galleries First lounge Terminal 3 London Heathrow

After an uneventful British Airways Business Class flight from Amsterdam to London on Saturday afternoon, my Qantas Chauffeur drove me from Holiday Inn Express Heathrow T5 to Terminal 3 on Sunday morning. As Qantas First Class passenger, I had access to both the British Airways Galleries First Class lounge and the Emirates Business and First Class lounge.
Breakfast at British Airways Galleries First Class Lounge Terminal 3 London Heathrow Airport
Pic: Breakfast at the BA Galleries First Class Lounge
As expected, the service at the BA Galleries First Lounge was lacking. Nobody to welcome me at the First Class dining area, tables with stains and greasy spots, ages before someone took my order, etc… still a lot to improve British Airways!
No 1 Traveller Spa and Lounge Terminal 3 London Heathrow Airport

As a Qantas First Class passenger, I was entitled to a 15 minute Spa treatment (menu) at the No. 1 Traveller Lounge & Spa . Fortunately, my ‘Fix It Massage’ session was a bit longer than the advertised 15 minutes. The therapist was friendly and professional, the treatment room rather small, as is the case with most airport spas.
Emirates Business and First Class Lounge London Heathrow Terminal 3 Breakfast

For my second breakfast, I visited the Emirates Business and First Class lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 3. The lounge didn’t have a separate area for First Class passengers, which gave it a less exclusive feel. However, the food and beverages buffets were quite extensive.

Around noon, it was time to board my flight QF10 from London to Melbourne (via Dubai). After reading a number of Qantas A380 First Class seating guides, I had selected seat 4A. The best seat in the house (3A) was already taken. The Qantas A380 First Class cabin is rather crowded with 14 suites, e.g. Lufthansa has 8 seats in First Class, but you can make it a bit more exclusive by selecting a seat in row A. Why? As a passenger in row A, you share the aisle with only 4 other passengers as there’s a divider between row A and F.

I didn’t have high expectations of the inflight catering, as Qantas doesn’t have a caviar service, something most other airlines offer in First Class. There were two menu’s for this 7 hour flight: a Tasting Menu and Lunch Menu. I went for the tasting menu of which the main course stood out: the Rockpool Bar and Grill style herb crumbed lamb cutlets with roasted carrots, cauliflower gratin, harissa and seeded mustard. It was one of the best lamb dishes I ever had… so delicious!

Qantas flight QF10 made a short stop in Dubai (1:45min) on the way to Melbourne to refuel and give the passengers the opportunity to stretch their legs. As Qantas has a partnership with Emirates, First Class passengers can use the Emirates First Class facilities at the A380 terminal at Dubai airport. I used the opportunity to take a refreshing shower and had a quick bite at one of the Emirates First Class à la carte lounge restaurants.

Weekend trips can be so awesome! Friday morning, I flew Jet Airways from Brussels to Toronto for the weekend. Very reasonable travel times of 8h 45min for the outbound flight and only 6h 16m for the inbound flight thanks to the strong jet stream over the Atlantic.Bart Lapers at frozen Niagara Falls HorseShoe Falls Canada

My day trip to the Niagara Falls on Saturday was originally booked with BG tours, but as they didn’t have enough participants they rebooked me with King tours. At $67 Canadian dollars, the 9am till 6pm tour was excellent value. Glad I avoided renting a car and battling the 240km (roundtrip) of icy roads!
